Statewide route: TxDOT CRIS
- TxDOT says it collects crash reports from every law enforcement agency in Texas, for crashes on any public roadway, and sells the Texas Peace Officer's Crash Report through its Crash Report Online Purchase System (CRIS). TxDOT's page calls the form CR-3; the CRIS help text calls it CR-4.
- Cost: $6 uncertified, $8 certified. TxDOT adds "a minimal surcharge for using this system" and says "Additional processing fees may be applied for credit card transactions."
- Timing: Texas law requires the officer to file the report with TxDOT within 10 days (§550.062(b)), and CRIS says that once TxDOT receives it, "it may take up to 4 business days to process."
- Search: by name, driver's license or ID card number, vehicle identification number (VIN), TxDOT Crash ID, or the agency's case ID. Knowing which agency worked the crash is not required to search.
- Full or redacted: CRIS says the non-redacted report "is available only to persons involved" and asks the buyer to complete an affidavit certifying involvement. "Redacted Crash Reports are available to anyone."
- Delivery: a non-redacted report bought by credit or debit card can be downloaded right after purchase; electronic check (ACH) payments have a ten-business-day hold; redacted reports go through a TxDOT review of up to ten business days.
- Mail: the CRIS help text still describes a mail-in form (CR-91), but the TxDOT page it points to no longer offers that form, so this tool does not describe ordering from TxDOT by mail.
- Phone on the agency's page: 844-274-7457 (CRIS help desk, (844) CRIS-HLP, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.)

Who may get the full report
Texas law sets the fee and who receives the full report. Anyone may request the redacted version, which leaves out names, contact details and other personal items. The quotes are the statute's own words.
“On written request and payment of any required fee, the department or the governmental entity shall release the information to: … (4) any person directly concerned in the collision or having a proper interest therein, including: (A) any person involved in the collision; (B) the authorized representative of any person involved in the collision; (C) a driver involved in the collision; (D) an employer, parent, or legal guardian of a driver involved in the collision; (E) the owner of a vehicle or property damaged in the collision; …”
“On receiving information to which this section applies, the department or the governmental entity that receives the information shall create a redacted collision report that may be requested by any person.”
“The fee for a copy of the collision report is $6. The copy may be certified by the department or the governmental entity for an additional fee of $2.”
“The report required by Subsection (a) must be filed electronically with the department not later than the 10th day after the date of the collision.”
This tool shows how a person gets the report of a crash they were in. It is general information, not legal advice. InjuryClaimGuide does not request, buy or hold crash reports. Procedures and fees change, so the agency's own page is where to confirm the current steps.
